ABOUT

Kyoosang Choi, AKA MonQ, is a Los Angeles based artist, illustrator, who makes eccentric an obsessive works in pen drawing, silverpoint, etching, and painted panels. While spending his childhood traveling all around the world, he became interested in various aspects of other cultures and visionary imagery. He then moved to New York to study art, attending School of Visual Arts, where he became fascinated with mixed-matches of symbols, historic and modern, tradition and contemporary. For MonQ, who is from a small town in South Korea, being in New York was like surfing in a flood wave of images from diverse times and myriad cultures. MonQ creates works in a dialog with the modern or contemporary world and where it is headed by analyzing where it has been. He "samples" images of torture from 16th century engravings, diagrams of scientific principles, details from classic European masterpieces, and modernist abstract paintings. He then carefully composes grids and mosaics to create poetic structures which ask questions after questions, while at the same time seeming orderly and pristine. What drives this artist is his pursuit to find personal order from this chaotic world.
